2017 Glasses

As mentioned elsewhere, we don’t go out for New Year’s Eve. Technically, we really don’t go out at all. Or have anyone in. It sounds crabby to say we don’t like people, but it’s true.

My ever patient husband indulges my imagination over-drive by letting me decorate for holidays as if Brad and Angelina are coming over. Wait. They wouldn’t be coming over together anymore.

Anyway…

For 2017, I decided I wanted some photo props for our big night. Number one on my list was a banner. Number 2? Glasses.

I saw this design on the Silhouette Store, but there were two problems with it. One is obvious – it isn’t the correct year, and searching the store didn’t yield the updated version. The second is that I really don’t enjoy buying already made designs because they present little challenge.

So, using that design as a guide, and my own glasses for measurement, I drew up my own version in Adobe Illustrator.

The vertical lines on the earpieces are going to be set to perforate in Silhouette Studio so I can fold them and glue the tabs to the glasses piece.

Make sure you make your glue flaps large enough so you can actually get glue on them, but not so large that they appear in the cut out portion of your glasses.

I exported the file as a DXF and then opened it in Silhouette Studio. By selecting the two vertical lines and applying a dashed line effect to them, the cutter will perf those lines instead of cutting them. This isn’t really as pretty as a true score line, but for a quick craft, it’s fine.

I sent it to print on my trusty 80# white cover stock. Once cut, I weeded and then folded on the score lines and glued the earpieces to the glass frame piece.
