Using my Silhouette Cameo

Have a Happy Time Layering Vinyl

Happy Face Layered Vinyl | SuzerSpace

I don’t know about you, but I needed a Winter Sanity Survival Plan this year more than ever.

One thing I wanted to try this year was a light – they go by different names, but generically they are referred to as Light Therapy Lamps. The theory is by using this special lamp in the morning that emits a particular color and strength of light you can “trick” your brain into not realizing it is the dark depths of winter.

There is some science to back it up, and it wasn’t expensive, and as long as you don’t look right into it there shouldn’t be any negative side effects (important note – I am not a doctor. I am not dispensing medical advice!), so I figure if I get a placebo or real cure for my winter time blahs it’s worth a try.

The only problem with the plan was the light I purchased for some reason had a power button that was super visible in the dark. It glowed a greenish white, and even if I turned the light to face the wall at night, it caused the wall to glow. So ironically, I was attempting to improve my alertness during the day while killing my sleep at night.

Cut Custom Earrings From Text or a SVG file

Cut custom earrings using a Silhouette Cameo and just about any text or SVG file using this easy technique | SuzerSpace

I have to admit that I was skipping over the earring tutorials for Silhouette Cameo or Cricut that were showing up in my Pinterest feed. They all seemed to be featuring a similar tear drop shape with cutouts, and that really isn’t my style, so I just kept scrolling.

But then last month a customer from my Etsy shop reached out for some assistance with a cut file, and after we worked through the kinks, she told me she was going to use my file of a Westie head to cut custom earrings for her cousin.

Well, that had never entered my (very vivid) imagination. You could turn just about any image, text or cut file into earrings with a strategically placed hole for the jewelry finding!

And down the rabbit hole I went.

Valentines Day is coming, and that’s a great excuse for whipping up a pair of very custom earrings.

Create A Score in Silhouette Studio

Create a score in Silhouette Studio to make your paper 3D projects look professionally finished | SuzerSpace

A score in the paper world is a deep crease in the paper that allows the fold to be crisp and clean. Without it, paper projects can show cracks and become crooked on the fold areas.

If you spend most of your crafting time working with vinyl, then you don’t have much use for it. But if you create cards or boxes, then you’ll definitely want to know the tricks to making them.

There is more than one way to create a score in Silhouette Studio. Cricut users also have score options, but since I’m a Silhouette crafter, I’ll be stepping you through that software. I’m also using a Cameo 3, which has a blade holder that accommodates two blades.

I have two favorite ways to create a score in Silhouette Studio:

  1. The faux score, which is really just a small perforation cut
  2. The Silhouette Studio Score, which still isn’t a true score, but it’s a little more finished looking.

I probably use the faux score 99% of the time, partly because it’s the easiest to set up, and partly because I don’t mind the end result. It’s really a personal choice – I encourage you to try out both on some scrap paper and see which way you prefer.

Happy Bats for Halloween

Cut Happy Bats out of contact paper to temporarily decorate for Halloween | SuzerSpace.com

This year, as I was cutting a new monster for my front window, I remembered that I had pinned another project that I wanted to do for Halloween.

But when I thought about it, making all those pieces and crawling around on my stairs didn’t sound like that much fun. Plus, I’d need to clean the stairs of all the dust and cobwebs. And then I saw this post on Instagram, and realized that a) I did not need to clean, and b) I could just put happy bats all over my stairs and it would be just as cute and my knees would thank me for it.

Bats have made several appearances at SuzerSpace, so I don’t think you’ll be surprised to find they are back for this year’s Halloween.

Create a Temporary Halloween T-Shirt

Create a temporary Halloween T-shirt using removable vinyl | suzerspace.com

I don’t think it is any big secret that I like to decorate T-shirts. I’ve posted about my favorite freezer-paper stencil technique enough times that I probably should start a category for it. And I’ve dabbled a little in Heat Transfer vinyl, although I need a lot more practice to be comfortable with it.

But sometimes, you just need a decorated shirt for a one-off event. Say, Halloween. Sure, I’ve hand painted a Halloween T-shirt before, but this year I wanted something different. Mostly, I wanted it to be temporary – so that the shirt could return to normal duty after the holiday.

This turned out to be ridiculously easy. I just used removable vinyl!

Purchase this hand-lettered cut file at suzerspace.etsy.com

I don’t go all out for the holiday; just a work appropriate Halloween T-shirt so I’m showing some spirit (pun intended 🙂 ) To capture that completely, I hand-lettered a “This is my costume” layout and then used my Silhouette Cameo to cut the words from two different colors of regular, removable vinyl.

If you’d like to make the same shirt, I have the cut file in my Etsy Shop. And if you hurry, there’s a Halloween sale going on.
