Not So Spooky Door Sign

As evidenced by past Halloween crafts, it might be kind of obvious that I really don’t like scary decorations.

Monsters? Sure, but they have to be friendly. Bats – well of course, but only if they are kind of punny.

So when I saw this Spooky wall art craft, I knew I had the basics of a new door sign. My goal was simple – I wanted a good, graphic door sign that wasn’t scary.

Taking my cues from Kayla’s sign, I set up the word Spooky in a big bold type and printed on 11 x 17 paper. I also printed a sheet of a buffalo plaid on text weight paper.

A scrap of cardboard from the recycling bin is my backer. I cut two strips of the buffalo plaid to frame the top and bottom of the my print. I used double stick tape to stick those three pieces onto the cardboard, and used my standard gift wrapping skills to fold the plaid strips over the edges and secured them to the back.

While I was pretty happy with the sign at this point, I wanted to take it a little further. Kayla adds spider webs to her letters, and I had my silver Sharpie all at the ready to add them, when I decided what it really needed was a bow.

As always, Google served up a winner of a bow pattern. Jessica Jones left her blog behind years ago to go on to better things, but  she has super kindly left up all the posts so you can go back and find the directions (and lots of free downloads) to make some super neat projects. She provides her bow file as a free download for cutting by hand or Silhouette Studio.

I cut that file out of a double sided sheet with Buffalo plaid on one side and orange on the other. A little glue is all you need to turn those odd shaped files into a cute 3D bowtie. The biggest decision left is whether to center it or put it off to one side.

Pin this for later so if you want to make a great not so spooky door sign you’ll be all set.
